How we work

From first call to certificate

What happens on every job, and the checks behind the certificate we hand over.

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the job

Call or email with a few details. For bigger jobs we visit first.

  2. Step 2

    Free written quote

You get a clear price in writing before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    The work

Cables run neatly, floors and furniture protected, and your power off for as short a time as possible.

  4. Step 4

    Test and certify

Every circuit is tested and you receive a certificate recording the results.

Inside the wall

What the colours mean

Most home circuits use twin and earth cable. The brown core is live and carries power to the fitting. The blue core is neutral and carries it back. The bare wire is earth, covered in a green and yellow sleeve where it connects, and it gives a fault somewhere safe to go.

Getting these three connected correctly at every point is the first thing we check.

Testing

The checks behind the certificate

Wiring can look tidy and still be unsafe, so every installation is tested before it is handed over. These are the checks, and the limits each one has to meet.

  • Continuity of protective conductors

    Readings recorded

Confirms the earth path is unbroken from every outlet back to the consumer unit.

  • Insulation resistance

    At least 1 MΩ

Shows the cable insulation is not leaking current between conductors or to earth.

  • Polarity

    Correct at every point

Checks live and neutral are connected the right way round at every socket, switch and fitting.

  • Earth fault loop impedance

    Within limit for each breaker

Confirms a fault will trip the breaker quickly enough to protect you.

  • RCD operation

Within 300 ms at 30 mA

Proves the RCD cuts the power when current leaks to earth.

Paperwork

What you receive

The certificate that comes with the job depends on the work done.

New work

Electrical Installation Certificate

Issued for new circuits, rewires and consumer unit changes. It records the design, inspection and test results.

Small jobs

Minor Works Certificate

Issued for small additions and alterations that do not add a new circuit, such as moving a socket.

Existing wiring

Condition Report (EICR)

Records the condition of an installation already in place, with any faults graded C1, C2, C3 or FI.
